Senior Machine Learning Engineer
Nearmap
3 years Not disclosed Sydney
Full time

Job Title: Senior Machine Learning Engineer Company: Nearmap Job Category: Machine Learning Roles & Responsibilities: Job Description This role is all about translating R\&D from other parts of the Nearmap AI \& Computer Vision team into data and ultimately, answers. You will be a core contributor to the algorithmic systems that create the Map Data behind Nearmap's AI products. Every time Nearmap flies a survey, we find and measure what's on the ground (roofs, trees, roads and much more) and turn it into foundational map data: clean, property\-level data that other products build on. We work with 2D and 3D aerial imagery captured daily across whole countries, alongside property boundaries, licensed open data and other geospatial sources. We get that data into the hands of the people and systems that rely on it, and keeping it affordable and trustworthy only gets more interesting as the volume grows. We design, build, and operate software systems that take petabytes of data to transform aerial imagery to insight. The team focuses on algorithmic systems, where each node of the computational graph is a software application in its own right (such as a deep learning model or geospatial algorithm), and the goal is to produce outstanding high\-quality data for customers and internal stakeholders in a fully automated and cost\-effective manner. Our technology stack is based on the python scientific libraries and traverses machine vision deep learning technology such as Pytorch, and GIS tools such as the GEOS, Shapely and GeoPandas/GeoPolars libraries. We work mostly in python for speed of development and occasionally drop down to compiled libraries when we need to care about performance. On a typical day, you might spend a morning tracking down why a pipeline slows to a crawl in one region but flies through another, and the afternoon with a machine learning researcher working out what it would take to run their new model over a whole country. You could finish the day reviewing a colleague's PR that makes inference faster, checking that the numbers still come out the same. Agentic coding tools like Claude Code are a normal part of how we work, and they're well suited to the exploratory, iterative work this role involves. * Keep those pipelines reliable: monitor runs, diagnose failures and fix root causes. * Develop geospatial algorithms, such as stitching features across tile boundaries and clipping them to property parcels. * Build the tools and systems that let internal users find and use our data themselves and support them along the way. We move fast and work smart; often wearing multiple hats. We adapted to remote working with ease and are continually looking at ways to improve. We’re proud of our inclusive, supportive culture, and maintain a safe environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging and can be themselves. * Quarterly wellbeing day off \- Four additional days off annually for your 'YOU' Days * Wellbeing and technology allowance * Annual flu vaccinations * Hybrid flexibility for this role * Nearmap subscription (of course!) * Stocked kitchen with access to all the snacks you need * In\-office lunch every Tuesday and Thursday at our Sydney CBD office * Showers available for anyone cycling to work or lunchtime gym\-goers! We move fast and work smart; often wearing multiple hats. We’re proud of our inclusive, supportive culture, and maintain a safe environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging and can be themselves. Job Title: Data Scientist - Credit Risk Models Company: Commonwealth Bank of Australia Job Category: Machine Learning Roles & Responsibilities: Credit risk models play a critical role in helping CommBank understand how our lending portfolios could perform as economic conditions change. You’ll work with complex data and challenging modelling problems, combining technical rigour with commercial and risk judgement to understand not simply what a model predicts, but why, what is driving the outcome and what it means for the portfolio. You’ll join the Model Development Chapter Area within Risk Management, which develops credit risk models and advanced analytics across the Group. We’re recruiting across both Retail and Non\-Retail Models, giving you the opportunity to apply your quantitative skills to complex credit portfolios and contribute to the development of stress\-testing models and methodologies. The broader Retail Models team develops estimates including Probability of Default (PD), Loss Given Default (LGD) and Exposure at Default (EAD), with models supporting regulatory capital, provisioning and stress\-testing activities. As a Data Scientist \- Credit Risk Models, you’ll apply advanced statistical and quantitative techniques to develop and enhance models that help us understand portfolio vulnerabilities, assess resilience under adverse scenarios and support better risk decisions. As such, you may regularly expect to: * Develop and enhance credit risk stress\-testing models using advanced statistical and quantitative techniques. * Apply approaches including predictive modelling, regression, time\-series analysis, panel\-data methods and macroeconomic modelling. * Translate economic and portfolio scenarios into measurable credit\-risk impacts, including changes in PD, LGD, exposure and expected credit loss. * Analyse model behaviour, sensitivities, limitations and key risk drivers to understand how portfolios may respond under different conditions. * Work with large and complex datasets, including incomplete or imperfect data, and determine practical, well\-governed approaches to analytical challenges. * Use R, Python and SQL, alongside relevant data and cloud platforms, to prepare data, perform analysis and develop models. * Translate technically complex modelling outcomes into clear insights that can be understood by both technical and non\-technical stakeholders. * Document methodologies, assumptions, limitations and modelling decisions clearly, supporting independent review and validation. * Partner across the modelling lifecycle with model users, independent model validation and business risk teams. Explore thoughtful uses of AI and emerging tools to improve analysis, learning, documentation and productivity, while maintaining appropriate human judgement and accountability. * You’ll be someone who genuinely enjoys quantitative problem\-solving. You’re comfortable getting into the detail of data and statistical methodology, but equally interested in understanding what the results mean and why they matter. To this role, you'll bring: This is an opportunity to deepen your technical capability in a sophisticated, highly regulated modelling environment where your work has a clear connection to real risk and business decisions. You’ll gain exposure to forward\-looking credit risk modelling, complex portfolio and economic scenarios, and experienced practitioners across modelling, validation, risk and the broader business. The role provides visibility beyond the mechanics of building models into how modelling insights inform portfolio management, planning and risk decision\-making. At CommBank, we're committed to creating an accessible, inclusive and respectful workplace. If you require support or adjustments, please let us know.
