Job Description
Job Title: Distinguished, Data Scientist
Company: Walmart Global Tech India
Job Category: Data Science
Roles & Responsibilities:
Role Summary
As a Distinguished Engineer in Data Science, you are one of the most senior technical leaders in the organization — an individual contributor whose scope, influence, and technical judgment shape how Walmart builds and operationalizes data science and ML at enterprise scale. You will define multi-year technical strategy across several data science domains, resolve the hardest ambiguous and cross-organizational technical problems, and raise the bar for engineering and scientific rigor across hundreds of engineers and data scientists. This is a hands-on role: you are expected to prototype, review designs, write and review production-grade code/models, and be the final technical word on the toughest calls — not just a strategist on slides.
Partner directly with VPs, Senior Directors, and Product leadership to translate business strategy into technical roadmaps, and to make build-vs-buy, platform, and architecture trade-off decisions with enterprise-wide consequences.
Drive the adoption of modern MLOps, experimentation, and responsible-AI practices (reproducibility, model monitoring, bias/fairness evaluation, data quality SLAs).
Identify and de-risk technical blockers before they become executive escalations — proactively surfacing risk, trade-offs, and mitigation paths to leadership.
Partner with Data Engineering, Platform, and Infra teams to ensure the underlying data foundation (ingestion, quality, lineage, governance) can support advanced analytics at scale.
Published research, granted patents, or recognized external thought leadership in ML/AI.
