Infosys Specialist Programmer and DSE: Roles, Salary, Exam Pattern and Preparation

Infosys Specialist Programmer (SP) and Digital Specialist Engineer (DSE) explained: reported salaries, how they differ from Systems Engineer, the coding test, interview and an 8-week preparation plan.

Infosys SP, DSE and SE in One Line Each

Infosys hires freshers into several roles with very different pay. The three you will hear about most are:

  • Systems Engineer (SE) is the mass-hiring entry-level role, selected mainly through aptitude and basic coding.
  • Digital Specialist Engineer (DSE) is a higher-paid role for candidates with stronger coding and DSA skills.
  • Specialist Programmer (SP) is the top fresher role, for strong problem solvers. It now has three levels: L1, L2 and L3.

If you can code well, aiming for DSE or SP instead of SE can more than double your starting package. This guide explains each role, the reported salaries, how selection works and how to prepare.

Note: Infosys changes its roles, packages and hiring routes between drives. The figures below come from news reports on the 2025-batch hiring drive. Always check the current details on the official Infosys careers page before you apply, and never pay anyone for an Infosys job.

Sources: Storyboard18 and ScanX, December 2025 for SP and DSE; PlacementPreparation for SE. Reports differ slightly. One report gives SP L1 as ₹10 lakh plus a ₹1 lakh joining bonus, another as ₹11 lakh. Treat all figures as indicative, not as an offer.

Systems Engineer (SE): The Entry Route

Most Infosys freshers join as Systems Engineers. Selection usually focuses on aptitude, reasoning, verbal ability and basic programming. It is a stable start, and many SEs move into better roles over time by learning new skills and earning internal certifications.

Even if SE is your realistic target today, preparing for the DSE level of coding improves your chances in every IT company test. For SE-level preparation, read our Infosys Placement Process guide.

Digital Specialist Engineer (DSE)

DSE roughly doubles the SE package. The selection test is coding-heavy, and interviewers expect you to explain your approach, analyse time complexity and discuss your projects in depth.

DSE is a good target for CS and IT students, and for strong ECE or EEE students, who can solve medium-level problems on arrays, strings, hashing, recursion and basic dynamic programming within the time limit.

Specialist Programmer (SP): L1, L2 and L3

SP is Infosys's highest-paying fresher role. According to the 2025-batch reports, it has three trainee levels with different packages. The level you are offered depends on how well you perform in the selection process.

SP levelReported package
Specialist Programmer L1 (Trainee)about ₹10–11 LPA
Specialist Programmer L2 (Trainee)about ₹16 LPA
Specialist Programmer L3 (Trainee)about ₹21 LPA

SP candidates are expected to solve medium and hard problems, including graphs, dynamic programming, greedy algorithms and bit manipulation. Competitive programming practice is the best preparation for this role.

Who Is Eligible?

The 2025-batch off-campus drive for SP and DSE was reported to be open to BE, BTech, ME, MTech, MCA and integrated MSc graduates in computer science and IT, and in selected circuit branches such as ECE and EEE. Academic cut-offs, backlog rules and eligible batches change between drives, so read the official notification carefully. Always declare any backlogs honestly, because Infosys verifies them.

How to Get Selected for SP or DSE

There is no single fixed route, but candidates are commonly reported to reach these roles in three ways:

  • Campus drives: Infosys visits many colleges, and some campus drives include SP and DSE roles alongside SE.
  • Off-campus SP and DSE drives: Infosys runs specialised off-campus hiring for these roles, announced on its careers page.
  • HackWithInfy: Infosys's coding competition has been used as a route to SP and higher roles for top performers. Check whether it is running for your batch.

Whichever route you take, the process usually has two stages: an online coding assessment, then interviews.

What the Coding Assessment Looks Like

Infosys does not publish a fixed pattern, and it varies by drive. Candidates commonly report an online test with a small number of coding problems of increasing difficulty, typically an easy, a medium and a hard problem, over a long time window of about three hours. Partial scores matter, so passing some test cases on a hard problem still helps.

These are the topics that come up most often:

TopicExample problem typeKey idea to know
Arrays and stringsLongest substring without repeating charactersSliding window, two pointers
HashingCount pairs with a given sumHashMap frequency counting
Stacks and queuesNext greater elementMonotonic stack
GreedyMinimum platforms, interval schedulingSort, then choose locally best
Dynamic programmingLongest increasing subsequence, knapsackDefine state and transition
GraphsShortest path in a grid, connected componentsBFS, DFS, Dijkstra
Bit manipulationCount subsets with a given XORBitmasks, XOR properties
MathGCD, modular arithmetic, primesSieve, fast exponentiation

For practice problems in a similar style, see Infosys Coding Questions and Infosys Coding Test Pattern 2026. For the stack pattern above, read our Stack and Queue Interview Questions guide.

Worked Example: A Typical Medium Problem

Here is a classic medium-level problem of the kind SP and DSE candidates should be able to solve quickly.

Problem: Given a string, find the length of the longest substring that has no repeating characters. For "abcabcbb", the answer is 3 ("abc"). For "pwwkew", the answer is 3 ("wke").

Step 1: Brute force. Start from every index and extend until a character repeats. This is correct but takes O(n²) time, which may fail the larger test cases. It is still worth submitting if you are stuck, because it passes the smaller ones.

Python
def longest_unique_brute(s):
    best = 0
    for i in range(len(s)):
        seen = set()
        for j in range(i, len(s)):
            if s[j] in seen:
                break
            seen.add(s[j])
            best = max(best, j - i + 1)
    return best

Step 2: Optimise with a sliding window. Keep a window that contains no repeats. Remember the last position of each character. When you see a repeat inside the window, move the window's start just past the earlier occurrence. Each character is visited once, so this runs in O(n) time.

Python
def longest_unique_substring(s):
    last_seen = {}   # character -> last index where it appeared
    start = best = 0
    for i, ch in enumerate(s):
        if ch in last_seen and last_seen[ch] >= start:
            start = last_seen[ch] + 1   # move window past the repeat
        last_seen[ch] = i
        best = max(best, i - start + 1)
    return best

What the interviewer wants to hear: the brute-force idea first, why it is slow, the sliding-window improvement, and the final complexity: O(n) time and O(k) space, where k is the number of distinct characters. Also mention the edge cases you tested, such as an empty string and a string like "abba", where the repeat falls outside the current window.

Tips for Test Day

  • Read all problems first. Spend the first 10 minutes reading every problem and solve the one you are most confident about first.
  • Secure partial marks early. Submit a working brute-force solution, then improve it. A correct slow solution beats an unfinished fast one.
  • Test edge cases yourself. Try empty input, a single element, all-equal values and the maximum input size before you submit.
  • Watch for integer overflow. In C++ and Java, use long or long long when sums or products can get large.
  • Keep your environment ready. Use a stable internet connection, a charged laptop and a quiet room, and follow every proctoring rule.

The Interview: What to Expect

Shortlisted candidates usually face a technical interview, often followed by an HR discussion. For SP and DSE, the technical round is deeper than for SE:

  • Your test solutions: be ready to explain the approach you used in the online test and how to improve it.
  • Live coding: a DSA problem, solved while explaining your thinking out loud.
  • Core CS subjects: OOPs, DBMS and SQL, operating systems and basic networking. Our OOPs Interview Questions guide covers the most common OOP questions.
  • Projects: expect detailed questions on design choices, the technologies you used and what you would change.
  • HR: relocation, willingness to learn new technology, and your long-term goals.

An 8-Week Preparation Plan for SP and DSE

  1. Weeks 1–2: Arrays, strings, hashing and sorting. Solve 3 easy problems a day in one language.
  2. Weeks 3–4: Stacks, queues, recursion, binary search and two pointers. Move to medium problems.
  3. Weeks 5–6: Greedy, dynamic programming and graphs (BFS, DFS, shortest path). These separate SP from DSE.
  4. Week 7: Bit manipulation and math. Take two full 3-hour mock tests with three problems each.
  5. Week 8: Revise OOPs, DBMS, SQL and OS. Prepare a 2-minute explanation of each project, and practise mock interviews.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Preparing only aptitude. SP and DSE selection is coding-driven. Aptitude alone will usually lead to SE at best.
  • Leaving hard problems blank. Partial test cases add to your score. Always submit a brute-force solution if you cannot find the optimal one.
  • Not knowing your own test solution. Interviewers often ask you to explain the code you submitted.
  • Trusting unofficial salary numbers as fixed. Packages differ between drives. Rely on your official offer letter.
  • Paying for "guaranteed" offers. Infosys does not charge candidates. Apply only through official Infosys channels.
